In my 4x4 embark my river froze in winter. Ok, I had built a small dwarven generator that finally worked very well. And connected this with my mist generator wich finally, also worked very nice. In a few time I had all the fortress with good waterfalls-related feelings. But in those moment I also had many problems related with "dangerous terrain".
The moment you have zombies for example, your hospital suddenly changes Form and becomes way more important than normally. And only after your first zombie fort, people come to love single rooms with lockable doors. Generally I play the early game in a tiny temporary fortress dug into the dirt in a corner.My fortress consists of two 3x3 main staircases. One goes all the way down to the magma sea and the other one is significantly shorter but also more frequented. I had some mood issues so I dug into a light aquifer at the top, and both staircases were filled with mist. All was going well, mood was skyrocketing. Walking through mist generates a happy thought for a dwarf, and can act to clean various contaminants off of dwarves. Mist is separate from magma mist and steam . Only issue so far is: 1. Draining lost steel items into the magma sea from long lost drowned dwarves, and 2. forgetting to forbid the items being drained so dwarves jump into the drainage passages, fall 60z levels down the shaft and not making it to the exit shaft before being drained into the magma sea.

I have a double mist generator set up to go into my tavern: Mist Generator. As you can see, I have 10 holes with statues under them. The interesting thing is for Reasons I ended up with those two holes to the right. As you can see, there's a dwarf in the bottom right. I've found they just LOVE these two holes. Due to a bug, when their jail term ends and they are alive, they will be moved from a jail chain to a cage, construct the said cage as a building, claim and dump the cage, this will strip the boss of all their possessions including artifact. Re: What size do people use for their Taverns/Temple/Library Dance floors. Taverns and temples are considered somewhat flawed by DF if they don't have a free dance floor of a min size of 5*5. A single tile tavern has been involved in rather severe FPS stuttering as characters try to path to the single tavern tile and it's occupied.
In my previous fortress, the non-military one, I appointed a one-handed dwarf as the tavern keeper. Before that point, we had a lot of alcohol deaths among guests. But after One-Hand took over the tavern, it became nice and safe there.
